The Automatic Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator (AICD)
The implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) is a minimally invasive medical device, typically with the battery positioned subcutaneously, used for the therapeutic management of severe ventricular arrhythmias.
When to propose the implantation of a cardiac defibrillator?

Primary prevention
In patients with a high risk of a first ventricular arrhythmia event, especially those with impaired cardiac function, family history of sudden death, etc.
Secondary prevention
In patients with a history of ventricular arrhythmia and risk of recurrence
Implantation of the defibrillator:
It is a minimally invasive procedure performed in the operating room. The defibrillation device is typically positioned subcutaneously in the suprapectoral region. The defibrillation lead connected to the device is placed inside the right ventricle, accessed through a peripheral vein.
The lifespan of a defibrillator battery is typically between 8 to 10 years and should be replaced at the end of this period.
Medical follow-up (telemonitoring):
For the proper functioning control of your pacemaker, your cardiologist/electrophysiologist will perform regular checks of your device at regular intervals.
Remote monitoring via telecardiology will help to extend the intervals between consultations. Thus, monitoring of certain parameters of your pacemaker's operation and your heart rhythm can be ensured remotely.
Thanks to telecardiology and the alert system sent to your doctor in case of arrhythmia occurrence, therapeutic management can be initiated more quickly.
Remote monitoring of your ICD allows for the diagnosis of asymptomatic arrhythmias at a distance (remote monitoring with receipt of alert messages) and thus the implementation of appropriate treatment if necessary.
Living with an ICD
It is recommended to contact your doctor in the presence of inflammatory signs at the site of implantation of the implantable automatic defibrillator or in case of fever.
The monitoring of the implantable automatic defibrillator's functioning will be conducted through spaced-out consultations and remotely if the installed model allows it (telecardiology).
